African Savanna Canvas Print, Storm Sky and Grassland Wall Art, Large Landscape Photo

Everybody comes back from Africa with the animals. Almost nobody comes back with the country they were standing in.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

This is the part that does not fit in a guidebook. Flat green grass running to a low treeline, scattered thorn bushes, a termite mound, a track worn through it, and above all of that a sky taking up two thirds of the frame with the light coming down through it in shafts and rain falling somewhere out on the right.

That rain is the real subject. Everything on this plain runs on a calendar written by the weather rather than the month: grass comes up when the storms arrive, the grazers follow the grass, the predators follow the grazers, and the whole country changes colour within days. Green like this means it has already rained. A few weeks either side and the same view is the colour of straw.

There are no animals in it, which is why it works on a wall. An elephant or a lion asks you to look at one spot and be finished. Open country with weather in it keeps giving you somewhere else to go, which is what you want from a picture you live with rather than admire once.

Printed large at 24 by 36 inches, because a sky this size needs the room. It suits a living room, a hallway, a stairwell or an office, and it is the right gift for anyone who has been on safari and misses the smell of the place more than the photographs of the animals.

Each canvas is signed by the photographer in the lower corner.
