Water lilies are the most painted flower in the world. Monet gave them thirty years and roughly two hundred and fifty canvases, and ever since, almost everything sold as water lily art has been a reproduction of a painting of them. This is not that. This is the flower itself, photographed on the water.

Three blooms, pale violet blue with a burst of yellow stamens in the middle of each, open among dark green pads on still water. One is fully out, one half open, one still a bud. The pads take up the rest of the frame in overlapping circles, which is what gives the picture its structure and stops it being a flower on a background.

Blue is the rare one. Most hardy water lilies are white, pink or yellow, and the blue-flowered kinds are tropical, the family the Egyptians painted on tomb walls and held sacred. They also behave differently from what people expect: the flower opens in the morning, closes again in the afternoon, and does the same thing for three or four days before sinking under the surface to set seed.

On a wall it does the job a good botanical print does. Calm, symmetrical, green and blue, no drama. It suits a bathroom, a bedroom, a hallway, a conservatory, a treatment room or a kitchen, and it sits comfortably beside both modern and traditional furniture.
