Birch Tree Canvas Print, Bark and Lichen Close Up Wall Art, Nature Texture Photography

A birch trunk close up, its papery bark lifting away in curled strips and pale green lichen growing in patches across it, with a stand of bare birches blurred into soft grey behind.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

This one is about texture rather than scenery. Cream, bone, grey and a little sage green, with nothing brighter anywhere in the frame, which is why it settles into a neutral room instead of fighting it. Up close the bark reads almost like torn paper, and the trees behind are soft enough to keep your eye on the one trunk.

About the bark: the white comes from betulin, a waxy compound packed into the outer layers, which reflects sunlight and keeps the trunk from being scorched on bright winter days when the ground is frozen and the tree cannot draw water. It peels in horizontal sheets because it grows that way, in thin layers, and the dark dashes running around the trunk are lenticels, pores that let the bark breathe. The lichen is two organisms living as one, a fungus housing an alga that feeds it. Lichens take everything they need straight from the air, which makes them very poor at tolerating pollution, so a trunk carrying this much of it is growing in clean air.

It prints well at any size. The 12 x 12 square suits a small wall or a grid, the 24 x 36 works as a single tall piece. Good in a bedroom, living room, hallway, bathroom or office, especially in a calm Scandinavian or natural scheme, and a fine gift for anyone who loves trees and quiet colours.

Each canvas is signed by the photographer in the lower corner.
