Scarlet Ibis Canvas Print, Red Bird on Branch Wall Art, Tropical Bird Photography

Everybody asks the same thing when they see a bird standing like this. Why one leg, and how is it not exhausting?

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

It is about heat. Legs are bare skin and scale with no insulation, so they leak warmth badly, and tucking one up into the body feathers halves the loss. As for the effort, there is none: the tendons in a bird's leg lock as the joint bends, so standing takes no muscle at all. A bird can sleep like that, on one leg, on a branch, and not fall off.

Which is why this looks less like a pose and more like an animal completely at ease. Scarlet red from crown to tail, a long black bill curving down past the breast, one coral leg on a bare branch, and behind it nothing but pale sky and a hint of green.

Hung, it does what one strong colour always does in a room: it becomes the thing your eye goes to first, and everything else settles around it. Against white or grey it is a jolt. Against deep green or navy it is luxurious.

For a living room, a dining room, a hallway, a bedroom or an office. A good gift for birdwatchers, for anyone who has travelled in the tropics, and for anyone whose home is all neutrals and needs one thing that is not.
