The leader of the flock is usually the oldest, most experienced and strongest member of the flock, as it has the most experience navigating their environment and is better able to lead the flock to areas of food and safety. The leader of the flock is also typically the first to take flight, with the other members of the flock following it, and it is the most likely to respond to any potential threats the flock may face.
