Somebody you know is about to do something on their own. Leaving home, moving abroad, going back to study at forty, handing in notice to start the thing they have been talking about for three years. This is the print for them.
Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.
One goose, high in an empty cream sky, wings on the downbeat, no flock anywhere in the frame. Geese are the most social birds there are, which is exactly why a single one reads the way it does. Nothing else needed saying, so nothing else is in the picture.
The emptiness is not laziness, it is the harder choice. The obvious move is to crop in until the bird fills the frame and you can count the feathers, and it would have been a worse photograph. Left small against all that space you get the scale of the sky instead, and the bird has somewhere to be going.
It is also simply an easy print to live with. Warm cream and soft grey, no strong colour to argue with a room, and one dark shape to hold your eye. It suits white, grey, sand, wood and almost any green.
Printed large at 24 by 36 inches, and the size earns itself here: the whole effect depends on the bird being small inside a big field of sky, which only works on a big canvas. Good above a bed, a sofa, a desk or a stairwell, and a genuinely thoughtful gift for a graduation, a new job, a new home or a leaving present.
Each canvas is signed by the photographer in the lower corner.
