Golden Eagle Canvas Print, Eagle Head Close Up Wall Art, Large Raptor Photography

No animal has been borrowed by more people. Roman legions carried a silver eagle at the head of the column and losing it was the worst disgrace available to a soldier. It went on to sit on the standards of half of Europe, and it is still on more flags, coats of arms and coins than any other bird alive.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

Look at it and you can see why nobody chose a pigeon. The eye is the whole thing: hard amber, unblinking, set under a heavy brow that gives every bird of prey the expression people read as authority. Around it, layer on layer of rust and copper feathers, and a hooked grey bill with a yellow base, parted slightly.

That stare is not just for show. A golden eagle can pick a hare out of a hillside from a couple of kilometres, and in Mongolia and Kazakhstan people still hunt with them from horseback, a tradition several centuries old and still practised by a few hundred families.

Printed large at 24 by 36 inches, because a portrait like this only works when the head is close to life size. The warm browns suit a study, a hallway, a living room or an office, and it hangs especially well against dark paint, wood panelling or exposed brick.

A serious gift for falconers, birdwatchers, soldiers and anyone with a weakness for eagles, which is most of human history.
