  • Details
A hamerkop is a large bird of prey that is native to Africa, Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula. It is known for its unusual-looking bill, which resembles a hammer. The hamerkop hunts by wading in shallow water, using its bill to probe for food hidden in the sediment. The bird will frequently thrust its bill into the water and then quickly open its bill to capture any small fish or amphibian that may be hiding in the mud. Hamerkop's also feed on insects, crustaceans, reptiles, small mammals, and even other birds.
