Red Deer Stags Canvas Print, Fighting Stags Black and White Wall Art, Large Wildlife

Two stags do not start here. They start by roaring at each other across a field, sometimes for an hour, each listening to how deep the other one sounds. Then they walk side by side, close, matching stride, measuring. Most contests end there, with one of them thinking better of it.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

This is what happens when neither backs down. Heads dropped, antlers locked, all the weight going forward through the neck and shoulders, hooves dug into the grass. It is not a display. Stags are injured in these fights every autumn and some are killed, and they do it because the winner holds the hinds and the loser gets nothing at all.

Taken in monochrome, which suits it. Stripped of colour you are left with the shape of the antlers against the dark treeline, the muscle along the neck, and the two bodies making one form in the middle of the frame. A colour version would have been a picture of brown deer on green grass.

Available up to 40 by 60 inches, which is the largest print in the shop and makes this a genuine centrepiece rather than a picture. For a living room, a hallway, a stairwell, a study, a country house, a lodge or a dining room, and best against dark paint, stone, wood or exposed brick.

A strong gift for stalkers, walkers, country people and anyone who has stood in a wood in October and heard that roaring start.

Each canvas is signed by the photographer in the lower corner.
