Tallberg Bridge Canvas Print, Steel Railway Bridge Wall Art, Sweden Industrial Photo

In 1891 a Stockholm engineering works shipped this out in pieces and men put it together 37 metres above a river in Norrland, by hand, in a place with almost nobody living in it. It was the second highest bridge in Sweden when it opened. It is still standing.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

Photographed from underneath, which is the only angle that shows what it actually is. The great curve running along the bottom is a hanging parabolic truss, the shape a chain makes under its own weight, turned into steel and used to carry the load out to the towers at each end. Above it the deck, and between the two a lattice of diagonals and rivets 164 metres long, repeating away into the distance.

It was built for the main line through upper Norrland and carried trains for nearly fifty years. Since 1938 it has been a road bridge, which is an unusual second life for a structure of this age, and a quietly impressive one.

As a print it belongs with architecture and industrial photography rather than landscape. Cool steel against a pale rose winter sky, hard geometry, frost on the trees below. It suits rooms with metal, brick, concrete or dark wood in them, where a nature print would look sentimental.

For a study, an office, a hallway, a workshop or a man's flat. A genuinely good gift for engineers, railway people, anyone from Västerbotten, and anyone who has driven over it.

Each canvas is signed by the photographer in the lower corner.
