Lake Reflection Canvas Print, Red Cottage and Forest Hill Wall Art, Nordic Landscape

Two red cottages, a hill behind them, and water so still it has made a second hill underneath. Everyone who looks at this picture ends up in the same place: wondering what it costs to live there.

Printed and shipped from the US for US orders, and normally from Canada for Canadian orders and from Latvia, inside the EU, for European orders, so buyers in Canada and the EU should not pay customs fees.

That is what the photograph is really selling, and there is no point pretending otherwise. It is a landscape with one small human thing in it, and the eye goes straight to the human thing. Two houses, a strip of grass, a shoreline, and behind them a wooded hill with the rock showing through, bare birches still waiting for their leaves, spruce holding the dark green. Nothing else for miles.

The red is worth knowing about. That deep brick colour on northern cottages is not a design choice, it is an accident of mining. The pigment is iron ochre, a by-product left over from copper ore, and generations of people painted their timber with it because it was cheap and because it preserved the wood. It is now so fixed in the northern eye that the colour alone says cabin, lake and summer before you have registered anything else in the frame.

Still water like this lasts minutes, not hours. It needs no wind at all, which usually means early morning or the hour before dusk, and the first breath of air across the surface takes the reflection away.

For a living room, a bedroom, a hallway, an office or a summer house. A good gift for anyone who grew up by a lake, anyone saving for a cabin, and anyone who has spent too many years in a city.
